Full description

26 May 1984.
In spoil from trenches between 6 Pirnhowe Street and new septic tank.
Area about 20m square, extends about halfway down garden behind house.
Spread of burnt daub, at 30cm down in face of trench, one possible shallow ditch and large quantities of Roman pottery (see details in file).
Note that on the street frontage, actually by the side of the Roman road, the soil was black humus with no Roman material down to 1.5m.
Probably post Roman or recent disturbance. In area of sherds there was 35 to 40cm of topsoil above natural sand and gravel. Appears to be edge of flood plain, separated from site 10613 by 100m of wet valley.
