Name:Site of Roman settlement and multi-period finds

Summary

Fieldwalking and metal-detecting between 1983 and 2013 recovered Roman, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; Roman and post-medieval tile fragments; post-medieval brick fragments; Late Iron Age and Roman coins; a post-medieval token and Iron Age, Roman and medieval to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include an Iron Age button/toggle; Roman brooches, a harness mount and strap-end; a medieval belt plate, casket key, candlestick and harness pendant and a post-medieval bell, candlestick, spoon, coin weight, trade weight, lead caryatid and hinge.
This is the site of a Roman settlement that extends to the south-west into NHER 20377.

1983 to 1984. Hales Survey site 114.
Half grown barley with few blank areas, tractor tracks etc.
Context 1 western half field (may continue 20377 c2)
2 Roman flanged bowl rims,
6 Roman greyware jar rims,
38 Roman greyware sherds.
5 sherds medieval unglazed.
6 Late medieval/Trans.
1 16th century glazed; 10 glazed red earthenware; 4 stoneware; 1 Staffs combed slipware.
2 Roman tiles.
Context 2, east part of field.
Roman greyware sherd, and 2 other possibles.
3 medieval unglazed sherds.
7 glazed red earthenware; 1 maltkiln tile; post medieval tile and brick.
