Name:Site of Late Saxon to medieval settlement and multi-period finds

Summary

This is the site of a Late Saxon and medieval settlement. Prehistoric flint flakes, fragments of pottery dating from the Late Saxon to the post medieval periods, and a Roman coin have been found during fieldwalking. A gilded pin dating to the Late Saxon or post medieval period has been found by metal detecting.

Full description

1983 to 1984. Hales Survey site 99.
Rough ploughed surface.
3 flint tools = flakes (J. Wymer (NAU) January 1985).
Sestertius, very worn, ?Trajan or Hadrian but pre Antoninus Pius.
3 Thetford type jar rims, late in form and fabric.
3 flat bases probably Thetford type.
3 Early medieval jar rims.
3 medieval unglazed jar rims and 2 unglazed bowl rims.
69 sherds, with occasional sagging bases, predominantly Early medieval and medieval unglazed but including some Thetford type.
1 rim, 1 sherd late medieval/early post medieval
2 sherds medieval probably glazed.
7 glazed red earthenware, 2 stoneware handles, 1 post medieval black glazed sherd.

Lovely 15th/16th century pin with filigree and granules decoration with head and gilded, of elongated form.
