Name:Concentrations of Roman and post medieval material

Summary

Fieldwalking in 1984 recorded a concentration Roman pottery sherds and bone set in distinctive dark soil, a concentration of considerable post medieval components and fired clay fragments on the side of a medium roddon, and two small concentration Roman pottery sherds. A few Roman and medieval pottery sherds were also recovered from the general area.

Full description

2 March 1984. Well weathered plough soil. (S1).
Context 1 - odd medieval and Roman sherds over field.
Context 2 at 5349 1558. Concentration Roman pottery set in distinctive
dark soil (farmer states he ploughed field deeper than usual this year). Sparse animal bone associated.
Considerable post medieval components particularly fired clay fragments. On side medium roddon. 25 x 12m.
Context 3 at 5347 1551. Small concentration Roman sherds, nothing else. On edge of dyke; dimensions suggest produced by dyke cleaning. Close to medium roddon. 17 x 10m.
Context 4 at 5347 1555. Small scatter Roman sherds, details as Context 3. 14 x 12m.
