Record Details

NHER Number:19640
Type of record:Monument
Name:Early Saxon cremations and multi-period finds

Summary

Fieldwalking and metal-detecting between 1982 and 2017 recovered prehistoric worked flints; undated, Iron Age, Roman, Early Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; a medieval roof tile fragment; a Roman coin; a medieval coin hoard; a medieval/post-medieval token and undated and Early Saxon to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include undated metalworking debris; a number of Early Saxon brooches and a sleeve clasp; a Middle/Late Saxon hooked tag; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval needle and book clasp; a medieval/post-medieval copper alloy vessel foot and leg; and a post-medieval silver cuff link.
The number of Early Saxon brooches and pottery fragments found on this site suggests that the Early Saxon cremation cemetery, NHER 3781, extends into this area.
