Summary

Fenland fieldwalking here in 1983 recorded a scatter of bone fragments and medieval pottery sherds in this area. Subsequent metal detecting undertaken during 1991-2001 recovered a huge number of metal objects, coins and pottery sherds. Finds included a possible Roman pestle for use with a cosmetic mortar, medieval buckles, a Commonwealth silver penny, Middle Saxon pins and pin beater, a post medieval coin weight and a medieval brooch.

Full description

15 March 1983. In newly harrowed field.
Abundant bone fragments over area approximately 80m north-to-south x 40m east-to-west. Few medieval sherds in same area. Although field condition limited collection of material, further visit is required. No obvious roddon pattern apparent in area, Whitwell Farm. One slight linear bank straddled by bone spread, could be a roddon.

Commonwealth penny (silver) 1649-1660.
Ipswich ware: sixteen pimply body sherds, one sandy base, three body sherds.

Thirteen medieval unglazed.

Maximum width of sub-rectangular section 8mm. Present length of around 22cm.
Very abraded. Could be Middle Saxon.
