Name:Site of St Mary the Virgin's Church, Warham

Summary

This is the site of the medieval church of St Mary Magdalen, which is known to have been still standing in 1690. Today there is no sign on the surface, but in 1960 four complete skulls, eleven incomplete skulls, a complete skeleton and a number of bones were discovered during the excavation of a ditch.

Full description

15th June 1960.
Human skeletal remains found in cutting trench north of site of Warham Hall. [1]
Four complete skulls, eleven incomplete skulls, one complete sketeton, numerous bones at depth 2ft to 4ft 6inches (0.6m to 1.4m).
Probably graveyard of demolished church of St Mary the Virgin.

The church is still shown as standing on Norden's map of around 1690 though he had reversed the dedications of this and St Mary Magdalen.
