Summary

This area has seen the laying of a water pipeline and the nearby construction of the southern bypass. During these works the site has been monitored and metal detectors used at repeated intervals. The only feature to be recorded is a possible ditch of unknown date, however a large number of objects have been recovered. This includes Neolithic flint tools and Roman coins and metal objects, as well as medieval and post medieval coins, metal objects and pottery sherds.

1981 to 1982. Found with metal detecting both sides of railway line, not kept separate. [1]
Medieval and post medieval material.
Doit of Overyssel 1796.
Charles I shilling, Tower issue.
Jetton, French possibly 15th century, plus another, uncertain.
One ore of Ulrica Eleanora of Sweden 1720.
Possibly Norwegian copper coin.
Fragment of lead bale seal with fleece.

Context one. Roman material. Coin, AS of Antonius Pius, issued in the name of Marcus Aurelius. [2]
Legend reads TR POT VIII COS II SC, and dates to AD 154-5, RIC iii 1322 see (S1).

Bronze 16th century coin weight issued in Netherlands. Obverse design is a lion in architectural frame. Reverse design is hand KI (hand is symbol for Antwerp).
Lead cloth seal.
George II bank token 3/- dating to 1811.

1992. Casual finds within Contexts 2 and 3. [5]
Two medieval strap-end buckles. Both have trapezoidal 'loops' and broken plates.

February-November 1993. Watching Brief.
Brundall to Whitlingham Rising Main (Field 0005).
Initial fieldwalking and metal-detecting where possible, followed by observation of stripped easement and, where deemed necessary, monitoring of the excavation of the pipe trench itself. Contexts 4 -259, along north edge of Context 3. Finds recovered from topsoil include:
Prehistoric worked and burnt flints.
Post-medieval pottery sherds, building material and other objects.
One possible linear feature was identified at approximately [7], but was not seen in section of pipe trench - site not visited.
Backfill for Norwich Southern Bypass work occurred west of this feature.
