Record Details

NHER Number:1791
Type of record:Monument
Name:Roman road

Summary

A long section of a major Roman road that passes through several parishes. Its terminus is unknown. This road is important because it may have influenced the pattern of Roman settlement around it. It is a hollow way in some parts and in others it is only visible on aerial photographs. Some sections are still used as farm tracks, and there are fragments of a 1.5m high agger still surviving. Parish and field boundaries often follow the route of the road. Parts of this road are now accessible through the National Cycle network.

2000. Field Observation and Desk-based Assessment.
Site visited and considered as part of archaeological assessment of Holkham Estate.
In woods at southern end of survey area the agger is visible as an upstanding feature, followed by the parish boundary and field boundaries. In woodland the agger is mostly obscured by undergrowth.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 22 April 2015.

July-August 2014. Watching Brief and Strip Map and Sample Excavation.
Archaeological mitigation work undertaken during installation of underground electrical cable for West Raynham Solar Park.
The cable route crossed the postulated line of this road at c.TF 8961 2829, where it is thought to have coincided with the line of an extant track. As the cable was tunnelled under this track there was little opportunity to observe deposits associated with the Roman road. No associated remains were seen in the adjacent fields.
See report (S2) and NHER 65282 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 3 February 2022.
