Name:Saxo-Norman linear feature and multi-period finds

Summary

A pottery kiln bar of unknown date, and fragments of Late Saxon and medieval pottery found in the late 1970s and 1980s. An evaluation in 2007 revealed a single linear feature containing Saxo-Norman pottery and animal bone, indicating domestic activity somewhere nearby.

Full description

1977. Surface find while gardening.
Unidentified pottery object, kiln bar?, tapering circular sectioned rod. Both ends broken. Maximum diameter 29mm, minimum diameter 22m, length 80mm. Dull orange fabric with profuse angular grits. Smoothed surface with slightly pimply feel. Either partially sooted or reduced.
Identified by A. Rogerson (NAU), February 1981.

1982. Context 2 at TF 6844 3779 within limited area of rabbit scrapings.
2 sherds glazed Grimston including sagging base.
3 unglazed sherds probably medieval.
1 medieval? Sherd oxidised with external off white slip.

1982. Same site as before, northern part of area. Context 3.
Rim sherd of Thetford type ware.
Rim of Thetford type inturned bowl.
Bodysherd of large Thetford type vessel, probably storage jar.

September 2007. Trial Trenching.
Excavation of single trench within footprint of proposed house.
A single linear feature running NNW- SSE was revealed. This dated from the Saxo-Norman period and was probably a property boundary. 9th to 11th century finds were also recovered, including pottery and animal bone, indicating domestic activity in the vicinity.
