Name: | World War Two pillbox and spigot mortar emplacement at Wayford Bridge |
---|
Summary
A World War Two Type 22 pillbox and the pedestal from a spigot mortar emplacement have been recorded as extant structures on the southwest side of Wayford Bridge. They have been visited on the ground and are visible on aerial photographs; the pillbox is also depicted by modern Ordnance Survey mapping. They form part of a larger group of World War Two anti-invasion defences surrounding the bridge, which as a river crossing was clearly a location of strategic importance.

May 2007. Norfolk NMP.
NMP mapping has led to the alteration of the central grid reference of the site from TG 3493 2475 to TG 3491 2478.
The World War Two Type 22 pillbox described above is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 3493 2475. It is also depicted by modern Ordnance Survey 1:2500 mapping. A small concrete structure visible 55m to the northwest (at TG 3489 2479) on aerial photographs taken in 1972 (S3) may equate to the spigot mortar pedestal also described above, but this is not entirely certain.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 23 May 2007.
