Name:Medieval metal and pottery finds

Summary

A thin scatter of medieval pottery was found on the surface of a field in 1980. Metal detecting between 2003 and 2012 recovered medieval coins; a Late Bronze Age socketed axe; a Roman ring-key; Late Saxon strap-end; medieval dress accessories, a horse harness pendant, papal bulla and seal matrix and a post-medieval buckle.

Full description

August 1980. Surface of cultivated field.
Centre of field, scattered over an area about 100m across.
Thin scatter of unglazed medieval sherds, including one which could just be Roman.

Undated ?post medieval lead metalworking debris.

January - February 2008, Site extended to whole field, previous area saved [2].
1 Roman key ring.
1 medieval lead papal bull, 1 buckle frame (Large, unusual, elaborate, gilt) and 1 silvered strap end (elaborate).
1 undated lump of metal (bears some resemblance to a BA axe blade).
