Summary

An Early Saxon iron spearhead was dug up in a garden in 1980. Further investigation recovered a fragment of prehistoric pottery, flint flakes, a possible fragment of Early Saxon shield boss and pieces of post medieval pottery.

Full description

July 1980. Ingleside Hotel.
In vegetable garden, below crest of gentle slope to east. Dug up from about 300mm deep.
Iron spearhead of Swanton type E3, (S1).

Site visited by A. Rogerson.

Spearhead had been found with point upwards facing northwest. At findspot was found a fragment of iron sheet (from above flange of shield boss? But 24cm diameter too great).

Also iron strip fragment, surviving length 53mm, width 20mm.
Bodysherd, hard, occasional organic elongated inclusions, varying deep pink to grey, undatable.

8m west of findspot, one body sherd flint gritted prehistoric pot and two flint flakes.

10m north, one post medieval sherd, red with brown exterior and spotted glaze.
