Record Details

NHER Number:15015
Type of record:Monument
Name:Multi period find scatter

Summary

Fieldwalking and metal detecting conducted from 1979 to 2003 have recovered a large and diverse selection of multi period finds as well as the remains of an undated clay building. A vast array of pottery sherds, coins and prehistoric flints were recovered. The most important find was a large Roman coin hoard which may have been buried during the Boudiccan revolt. Other noteworthy finds included a Roman cosmetic pestle and mortar (components unrelated), a Colchester type brooch and a Middle Saxon brooch. Some sort of Roman occupation site was located to the south of the main find scatter and the coins may suggest that this was of a military nature.
