It is 4km long, is straight, was opened in 1833 and was designed as part of a scheme to link Lowestoft harbour with Norwich. It was hoped that the scheme would allow coastal vessels direct access to Norwich. The scheme was superseded by the construction of the Norwich to Lowestoft railway.
