Record Details

NHER Number:13009
Type of record:Monument
Name:Site of Roman and medieval settlements

Summary

Fieldwalking and metal detecting have recovered Roman coins, pottery, building material and metal finds including a silver finger ring. This suggests that this is the site of a Roman settlement. The cropmark of a possible building visible on aerial photographs has been tentatively identified as Roman. Another cropmark represents the former course of a road, and a concentration of medieval finds associated with the cropmark suggest that this was the site of an early medieval settlement that expanded during the medieval period. The settlement had been abandoned by the post medieval period. Other finds from the site include prehistoric flints, Bronze Age or Iron Age pottery, a Late Saxon strap fitting and other medieval and post medieval finds.

Fieldwalking has recovered a concentration of Roman material from site 17, and interprets the cropmark of a possible building as Roman. Site 18 is an isolated early medieval site that is associated with a cropmark that represents the former course of Transport Lane. The site expanded during the medieval period, but had been abandoned by the early post medieval period.
