Name:Multi period finds and possible lithic working site

Summary

Between 1968 and 2001, a combination of fieldwalking and metal detecting recovered a range of Neolithic worked flints, including a polished axe and waste from a flint-working site. A number of other prehistoric worked pieces were also found. Fieldwalking also recovered Iron Age, Roman, medieval and post-medieval pottery fragments. Metal-detecting between 1983 and 2009 recovered Roman coins, a medieval harness piece and lead seal, and a post medieval clay pipe bowl, book clasp and silver coins.

THE TRACKWAYS PREVIOUSLY RECORDED UNDER THIS SITE ARE NOW INCLUDED IN NHER 43544. THE ENCLOSURES AND FIELD SYSTEMS HAVE BEEN SPLIT INTO SEVERAL DIFFERENT SITES (NHER 45188, 45164, 45174 AND 45155).

1968. Neolithic polished axe found.
1975,1989. NAU Air Photography. Cropmark complex.
1983. Metal detecting find. Medieval coin.
1984. Prehistoric flints found.
1984 and before.
Roman coins. Post medieval clay pipe bowl, book clasp, bronze bell fragment.
1985. Metal detecting. Medieval harness, lead seal.
1994. Fieldwalking. Neolithic flint-working site.
1995. Neolithic flint, Iron Age and Roman sherds.

Cropmarks field system, enclosuress and trackways clearly visible on different alignment to modern layout.
Although many of the tracks lead to Hobland Hall suggesting most of the features relate medieval period.
However elements within these more regular field are likely to be Iron Age/Roman.

The cropmarks previously included under this number have been split into a number of new sites. Any undated or unphased cropmarks have been grouped into a large multi-period site under NHER 45200. The trackways mentioned above are now included in NHER 43544. The enclosures and field systems have been split into several different sites; NHER 45188 and 45164 deal with cropmarks of potential Iron Age to Roman dates, including enclosures and field systems. NHER 45174 consist of a series of enclosures and fields of unknown, but pre-post medieval date. All of the post medieval field boundaries are grouped under NHER 45155.
