Full description

1973. Fieldwalking.
Scatter of finds recovered along the edge of Great Wood:
1 undatable prehistoric pottery sherd (flint and sand tempered rim sherd - Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age?)
140 prehistoric worked flints, including 10 cores, 11 blade cores, 2 core rejuvenation flakes, 2 fragments of irregular waste, 41 flakes, 49 blades (including a fragment with edge gloss), 23 scrapers (many with steep coarse retouch), 1 retouched flake and 1 possible flaked axe fragment (S1). These were not individually dated, although it was suggested that the assemblage was possibly predominantly Mesolithic and Bronze Age.
10 Roman pottery sherds, including 9 greyware sherds and 1 mortarium base.
38 Early Saxon/?Early Saxon pottery sherds, including several decorated sherds. See drawings (S2).
1 medieval Grimston ware pottery sherd.
2 post-medieval pottery sherds.
4 undated tile fragments (suggested as possibly Saxon).
3 undatable fired clay fragments.
Finds initially recorded by M. Carr, 20 August 1982, see list and descriptions in file. Pottery identifications subsequently checked by A. Rogerson (NAU) and R. Rickett and flint identifications corrected by F. Healy (see list in file).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 21 August 2013.
