Summary

Metal detecting between 1986 to 1995 recovered a wide variety of finds including undatable prehistoric and Mesolithic/Neolithic worked flints; Roman, Early Saxon, medieval and post-medieval coins (including a gold-plated 6th-century Tremissis); a post-medieval commemorative medal and a number of other metal objects. The metal finds include medieval and post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval lease swivel and a post-medieval coin weight, mirror case and lead seal.

All cropmarks previously recorded under this NHER number have now been moved to NHER 42224.

Full description

1986 to 1987. Metal-detecting.
Finds in south area of western field:
2 undatable flint scrapers (one with shallow retouch) and 1 flake.
1 Mesolithic/Neolithic flint blade.
1 Roman coin (Dupondius of Trajan; reverse illegible AD 98 - 117).
1 Early Saxon gilt coin (Tremissis, 6th century contemporary forgery, plated, of Justinian AD 527 - 565, Constantinople mint). Identified by British Museum and currently on loan to the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : L1987.4).
1 medieval buckle (14th century), 1 buckle fragment and 1 purse frame.
1 post-medieval coin (Charles I 6d, initial mark a triangle 1639 - 1640), 1 coin weight (for Rose Royal, James I; after 1612), 1 buckle, 1 stud from strap?, 1 cosmetic mirror case (broken glass inside), 1 rectangular ?snuffbox, 1 lead seal (1637) and quantity of post-medieval metalwork objects, nails etc.
Also 1 illegible coin weight and various post 1500 coins.

1 post-medieval stud and late post-medieval metalwork.
No other details recorded. Although probably from this location it is possible that some of these finds come from the field to the north-east, within an area that was previously included in this record (see mapped extent of relevant Event record).

11 October 1992. Metal-detecting.
1 medieval part of swivel (12th/13th century, dragon heads and central hole for shank for dog's leash). See (S1).
1 post-medieval pewter commemorative medal (Great Yarmouth; W.C.SAYER CLOTHIERS 21 MARKET PLACE 1897).
Swivel identified by S.Margeson (NCM) and medal by J. Davies (NCM).
Although probably from this location it is possible that some of these finds come from the field to the north-east, within an area that was previously included in this record (see mapped extent of relevant Event record).
