Name:Cranwich deserted medieval village and multi-period finds

Summary

The site of Cranwich deserted settlement, visible on aerial photographs. Metal-detecting and fieldwalking between 1980 and 2012 have recovered large numbers of objects, reflecting activity during many different periods. The earliest find to date is a possible Upper Palaeolithic scraper and flints of Mesolithic and Neolithic date have also been recovered. Large quantities of Iron Age, Roman, Early Saxon, Middle Saxon, Late Saxon and medieval metalwork and pottery have also been found. Notable finds include Iron Age, Roman, Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval coins; Bronze Age/Roman tweezers; an Iron Age terret and Late Iron Age two-link bridle bit; Iron Age/Roman brooch and ring; Roman brooches and furniture fittings; an Early Saxon ring; Late Saxon ploughshare; medieval ampulla and a medieval/post-medieval dagger scabbard chape.

The earthwork and cropmark banks and ditches relating to Cranwich medieval settlement remains and further features identified from the Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) survey are now recorded under NHER 63072.

3 unidentified copper alloy objects (collar or ferrule, odd bronze sheet (both post-medieval?) and tube with one end open).
