Record Details

NHER Number:10044
Type of record:Monument
Name:Bronze Age or Roman barrow and Roman coins found at Nunmete / Nonmete Hill

Summary

In 1465 '100 shillings' worth of Roman coins (possibly from a coin hoard) were found when Nunmete Hill was excavated. Their discovery is probably the first recorded 'archaeological excavation' in Norfolk. Nunmete Hill may have been a barrow, possibly of Bronze Age or Roman origin. There has been some confusion between this site and the nearby 'Old Groggams' mound (NHER 10045).

Full description

AD 1465, '100/- in coined money' (100 shillings) found when Nunmete Hill was opened.
See (S1) and (S2) (neither checked).

Informant [1] states that Hill Farm stands on the site of the mound, hence the name.
However (S2) believes it was the same as NHER 10045 (information from E. B. Green (NCM)).
References checked by A. Lawson (NAU).
(S1) is merely quoting (S2). No sign of barrow anywhere in area.
A. Lawson (NAU), 17 December 1975.

See article by member of the public [1] in (S3) quoting (S1) and showing that he only assumed the two barrows were the same on the basis of a similar story attached to both about the finding of coins.
E. Rose (NAU), 8 October 1985.

December 2005.
Probably the first recorded 'excavation' in Norfolk.
D. Gurney (NLA), 7 December 2005.
